Frozen Urine & Why it Works As an avid hunter, I have used the best name-brand scents and had poor or no results while hunting.  I have also poured these expensive scents down the back of a tame doe, turned her in with a mature, rutting Whitetail buck and watched as he smelled her and turned to walk away with no interest. What is going  on?? These mass produced urines sit on the shelf in a store for a long time before they are purchased. They start to break down, turning rancid and becoming blackish in color. Alcohol or some other type of preservative is added to try and keep the urine fresh. The urine is spoiling on the shelf and will not fool a mature, rutting Whitetail. But the ad says "Collected from a single doe during the peak of the rut." This leads the buyer to believe that this urine is fresh and full of pheromones - not so. Can you imagine how many does would have to be available for collection during the 24 hour peak of estrous? This is simply not possible. What are pheromones? Pheromones are a live product that is secreted from the doe, which signal to the buck that she is ready to be bred at the time of ovulation. The buck can detect pheromones when he does a flaming curl. A flaming curl forces the air that the buck inhales into smaller passages in his naval cavity, an area where the live pheromones can be detected by the buck.  When a buck smells live pheromones, he will do whatever he can to get near the doe in estrous. When a buck is looking for a doe in estrous, he is first looking for a good amount of doe urine.  Does do urinate a lot more when in estrous.  Once the buck finds a doe urinating frequently, he goes to the spot of heavy urination, puts his nose into the puddle and inhales deeply.  Then, doing a flaming curl, he is able to determine if the doe is ready to stand for breeding.  If you are using a 1.5 ounce bottle of old, rancid urine you are fooling no one.  The urine is not fresh and you are not using enough to simulate a doe in estrous. I use a 10 ounce spray bottle of frozen fresh urine.  When I am hunting I spray out about half an ounce at a time, and about every half hour.  I hunt approximately 10 - 15 feet off of the ground and usually spray the urine on a tree about 10 feet away.  This way I can see when the urine has evaporated into the air and has created a scent trail.  When the tree is dry (app. 30 minutes later) I spray it down again.  Any buck that smells this much fresh urine in the air must come in close to check for pheromones.  When he does, it is too late for  him and I have had another successful hunt!  If I do not harvest the buck he will usually spend at least 15 - 20 minutes around my tree trying to find the doe. I also have does respond to the frozen fresh doe urine.  This is a plus because the more does around my stand, the more likely a buck will show up.  At first I was puzzled about does being so interested in this doe urine.  I believe that the wild does can actually smell the food that my tame does have been eating in their urine.  Imagine dumping a pail of corn behind your cabin.  At first you have only a couple of deer coming in but before long you have 20 - 30 showing up for a bite of corn.  The first deer that showed up to eat the corn actually found it but the other deer could smell it way back in the woods by smelling the droppings and urine of the first deer.  Then they simply followed the first deer to the food source. My does have been eating soybeans, corn, sunflowers, oats, beet pulp, molasses and alfalfa hay.  Any doe living off of dry twigs would want to meet this new doe in the woods and follow her around in an attempt to locate this new food source. Our doe urine is frozen as soon as it is collected.  It is shipped out frozen and should be put back in the freezer as soon as it is received by the buyer.  This urine should only be thawed the evening prior to your hunt.  The urine should be poured into a quality spray bottle that has a good stream setting and should be used liberally throughout the course of your hunt.  If a hunter pays attention to all the typical hunting insights, such as wind, human scent control, noise, etc., he should have an awesome response to this fresh urine.
